Overall Personality --Besides the garments and the hairstyle, this is really where Vergil differs from his twin brother Dante. Vergil is a cold and very calm indivitual who tends to be very collected. He maintains his calmness and coldness at all times and it’s rare to see him show any emotion what-so-ever, keeping his feelings to himself and emotions suppressed at all times. He believes that feelings and emotions have no place on the battle field and are merely distraction to him; he says this because he follows the path of a true warrior, even renouncing guns over swords and saying that they are not the weapons of a true warrior. Though there are two things that he cherishes and those things are Yamato, a memento from his father, and his half of the Perfect Amulet, a gift from his mother.
The Dark Slayer wishes to obtain more power through any means necessary and without a care of the consequences it brings to others. He believes power is everything because with power, he can protect that which is dear to him, a possible reference to what happened to his mother.
Despite his cold and ruthless persona, Vergil is a true warrior and thus abides by the warrior’s code and is very chivalrous when he wants to, specially if in the presence of Lady Ephemera.

The only difference between the two is the fact that Vergil wears his hair brushed back so he doesn’t look exactly like Dante.
As for garments, Vergil is always seen with the same type of clothing and not even the color differs: a blue turquoise coat with a snake pattern on the right side of it and three tails, a dark blue armless jacket, darker blue pants, brown boots with buckles on their front and brown fingerless gloves. He is also seen with his primary weapon of choice, the Yamato.
His Devil Trigger form maintains most of his garments, though with a strange and scally pattern, his feet replaced by paws and his hands by claws, his eyes turning into an turquoise blue, fangs and his head has a strange shape and the top is of a metallic color. He may or may not sprout black wings from his back.

Overall History --When the massacre the Emperor of Darkness, Mundus, began, one demon rose from within his ranks to put a stop to this and that was his once loyal guard, Sparda. The Dark Knight vowed to protect the humans, for he loved them because he had fallen in love with a human named Eva. Sparda defeated Mundus’ entire army single handed and moved up to the Emperor of darkness himself, defeating him using his power and the hope of bringing peace to the humans and his lover, which at the time bared two children, and send him and his army back to the demon realm.
Using his sword and the Perfect Amulet, combined with his blood and the blood of his lover, the priestess, Sparda was successful in closing the gateway between the Underworld and the human realm. The dark knight lost most of his powers with that, though it was worth it, for he could now live in peace with his lover and the twins that were on their way.
Soon after the defeat of Mundus, Eva gave birth to twins Dante and Vergil. Much to their parent’s satisfaction, they were born with a normal appearance but they both knew that they held great power inside of them, given that they were half-human and half-demon, though that power was still locked from them and would probably only be unlocked when they reached an older age.
Ever since Vergil was little, he seemed to have a great interest in fighting and swords, often asking his father to teach him how to wield them. So from then on, Sparda began to teach his art to his sons, in hopes that should Mundus find a way back to the human realm, those two would be humanity’s hope. While Dante showed a more rebellious personality, often skipping lessons, Vergil showed to be quite the pupil, following his father’s lessons without questioning or whining. He hoped to be as good as his father some day thus he would follow the path of the true warrior, hoping some day he would become a force to be reckoned with.
Close to their 8th birthday, Eva presented each with a piece of what appeared to be an amulet. While Dante got the golden part, Vergil was gifted with the silver one, but it wasn’t just that that they received. His father bestowed them each with their very own Devil Arm; Vergil was gifted Yamato, a O-Katana who’s power and range were unmatched as his brother received Rebellion, an abnormally large blade. Vergil was pleased with his gifts and preferred his sword over Dante’s given that not only was it more graceful, his combat style matched that weapon perfectly. The reason why the twins received their gifts early, was because Sparda was dying, becoming weaker and weaker as time passed and it was around their 8th birthday that their father died.
It also seemed that fortune did not smile upon the twins, because on the date of their birth, a group of demons sought revenge for what Sparda did, thus attacking the family and killing Eva, who gave her life protecting his children so they could get away safely. Blaming himself and Dante for being weak and failing to protect his mother like he had promised his father, Vergil separated from Dante and followed his own path. The boy grew up following the path of the warrior, always seeking more and more power and only working alone, never relying on anyone but himself nor establishing any connection.
Vergil had always sought the force Edge, his father’s true sword that, from what he had heard, was the most powerful weapon that existed not only in the human realm, but also in the demon realm. Such power was his by right and he was the only one that deserved receiving such a powerful weapon. Vergil stumbled upon a library of long, powerful and forgotten lore, the immense books filled with demonic runes and written in their ancient language were sure to have some information regarding Sparda and his weapon.
Upon searching for a proper book to analyse, a strange and elderly figure approached him. He introduced himself as Arkham and he seemed to have some knowledge about demonic legends. The man captured Vergil’s attention by commenting on the Temen-ni-gru, the fabled tower that his father had sealed off. Arkham said that if Vergil wished to obtain the power of his father, he would have to resurrect the tower using the Perfect Amulet. The power hungry son of Sparda believed in the man’s words, thus he began the tower’s resurrection ritual. First he renamed the fallen angels and then he sent Arkham and some demonic fiends to lure Dante into the tower so that he could get his hands on the other half of the Amulet that Dante possessed.
After Dante finally reached the top of the tower where Vergil stood and awaited his arrival, the twins engaged in a furious battle, of course unable to skip the little “pleasantries” the two always had. Eventually, Vergil rises victorious, besting Dante in their duel and obtaining his half of the Perfect Amulet. But after defeating his brother, it seemed that Dante was as stubborn as ever, refusing to stand down and awakening his Devil Trigger. This made Vergil prepare for another fight against his brother, though given that he already acquired what they came there for, Arkham suggested to Vergil that there was little point in continuing the fight and they both jump down the Tower back down to the Forbidden Land.
When Vergil and Akrham reach the door to the Lair of Judgement, Vergil informs Arkham that he was well aware of Arkham’s intentions from the start, thus impaling him for betraying his trust and making his way inside so he could begin the ritual that would allow him to open the portal to the Netherworld. Shortly after, as Vergil is continuing the ritual, an immense beast appears before him, threatening to kill him for being Sparda’s son and finally taking his revenge. Vergil only smirks as he easily slices and dices the behemoth, acquiring his soul to use as a Devil Arm.
As Vergil attempted to unlock the final seal, he had no luck in accomplishing it and was abruptly interrupted by his brother once more, who insisted on battling him. Though this time, Vergil was unable to defeat his brother, because a strange girl appeared out of nowhere and disrupted the fight, which the two considered a tie given the circumstances. Much like the girl, a jester appears and shows that he was the mastermind behind it all, also showing that he was both Jester and Akrham and explaining to Vergil the reason why he was unable to unlock the final seal.
Given that all the pieces were finally in place, Jester/Arkham, opened the seal, knocking the three out of the platform, making Vergil fall into an Abyss. But the dark slayer would soon crawl back up and enter the portal to the Netherworld, joining forces with Dante to defeat the abomination Arkham turned into.
After that little problem was taken care of, Vergil says to Dante that he still seeks the Force Edge and the two fight one more, only this time, Dante bested his brother, which refused to go back to the human realm and fell deeper into the Netherworld. The man was there confronted with the prince of Darkness Mundus and despite being mortally wounded, he insisted that if his father was able to defeat him, so would he. Such a shame that he was proven wrong, thus loosing to the Emperor of Darkness which consumed his soul and corrupted him, turning him into Nelo Angelo.
Mundus used his power to influence Nelo to fight Dante and even after seeing the other part of the perfect amulet, he was still unable to break free of Mundus’ will, thus he would fall by the sword of his brother.
Though Lady Fate seemed to favour Vergil and wished that he continued fighting, because not long after the death of Nelo Angelo, a member of the Night Blade, the group of demons that supported Spardas cause, used a life-linking ritual to bind her life to Vergil, thus resurrecting him. Vergil once again lives, though the world had changed a lot and it appeared that Mundus was back. What the Dark Slayer would do now? That is uncertain, but what is certain is that he at the time stands beside Lady Ephemera, guarding her with his life.
